In 2008, laptops officially outsold desktop computers for the first time and experts believe that, by 2011, 71% of all computers sold will be laptops. Estimates put the 2008 current laptop market at over $137 billion. Clearly, laptop computers and accessories will be one of the hottest economic and technological trends in the near future.

However, laptops are not without their innate problems. For instance, laptops are three times more likely to break in the first year than desktop models. And laptops are being stolen and lost at alarming rates. But there is a new product that can help consumers hang on to their valuable computers.

A growing trend for owners of laptop computers is the use of laptop skins, protective stickers that are applied directly to the computer. These are made of durable vinyl which is then laminated to give an extra dimension of protection. The stickers are made of substrates that can be easily printed upon. They are very easy to apply and remove, with none of the residue that some adhesive products leave behind. Initially the purpose of laptop skins may have been simply to protect computers from wear and tear, from spills, scratches and purely cosmetic issues. They look attractive as well.

But perhaps an even more important purpose for laptop skins is identification. Airports, train stations and college campuses are the black holes into which laptop computers seem to disappear most frequently.

If you leave your laptop on a table, a bookshelf or even the floor, far into the stacks of a college library, it will be extremely easy to spot with a brightly colored and even personalized laptop skin. Sometimes, even though it is strongly discouraged, you may have to check your laptop instead of carrying it on to an airplane or train. When it comes down the baggage conveyer belt, you will be grateful that your dog’s photo or company logo makes it easy to spot. Laptop thieves will be discouraged from taking anything so recognizable. If they are caught with a common-looking laptop, they can always claim mistaken identity. That will be far more difficult when your laptop skin is unique and colorful.
